Concerned about begging on streets

COURTESY TO THE BELLINGHAM HERALDApril 22, 2014

The uncontrolled growth in street-side begging is giving Bellingham a black eye! While Mount Vernon and other Washington communities have outlawed this activity, Bellingham has continued to tolerate its growth. Now it seems the practice is cropping up on business property entrances and exits as well. We are blessed with many visitors from outside areas who also are forced to endure continued pleas for money without regulation.

Why don't the county and city councils deal with this issue and its business-destroying potential?

Area residents and businesses support a large safety net that can provide assistance to those in need through various agencies and churches. Use of these resources could supplant public begging operations and get it off the streets along with diligent regulation. Let's enhance our community appeal and utilize better ways to provide help to needy folks in the process!
