THE BELLINGHAM HERALDApril 21, 2014

Lauren Maley pitched a shutout as Ferndale's softball team topped Blaine 10-0 in five innings in a Northwest Conference game on Monday, April 21, at Ferndale.

Maley struck out eight for her 11th win in a row. She is undefeated on the year and has been the winner in all 11 of Ferndale's (11-1, 6-0 NWC) victories.

"Lauren was pretty strong," Ferndale coach Holly Hilton said in a phone interview.

She got lots of help from her offense, as the Golden Eagles knocked 14 hits in the game.

"We laid down some bunts and adjusted to the pitches quite nicely. We were able to put it in play," Hilton said.

Savanna Shawler went 2 for 3 with two RBI and Scarlett Nyenhuis went 3 for 4 with a triple and 3 RBI.

Ferndale scored in every inning except the fourth. The Golden Eagles scored four runs in the fifth inning to end the game.

Blaine only managed two hits in the game - one from Alexis McElwain and the other from Riley Miller.

Hannah Kiele, McElwain and Lyric Berry all pitched in the game for the Borderites, who move to 6-5 overall and 3-3 in the NWC.

Ferndale faces Nooksack Valley on Friday, April 25, at Nooksack Valley Middle School. Blaine plays Meridian on Friday at Pipeline Fields.
