Pioneers baseball tops Baker

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDApril 19, 2014

Nooksack Valley's baseball team had an answer for everything Mount Baker did, winning 4-3 in a Northwest Conference game on Saturday, April 19, in Everson.

The Mountaineers scored two runs in the first inning, but the Pioneers responded with two in the bottom half of the inning. Nooksack scored one in the third before Baker put one on the board in the top of the fifth inning.

Nooksack scored one in the bottom of the fifth to snag the win, while Ryan Gelwicks pitched two shutout innings to close it out.

"It was a good game," Nooksack Valley coach Scott Gelwicks said in a phone interview. "It was business. We did a good job answering their scoring."

Ryan Gelwicks' last two innings featured three strikeouts.

"He's looking confident," Scott Gelwicks said. "The more confidence he has, the more confidence I have in him."

Dalton Biehle was credited with the win.

Nooksack (6-5, 2-3 NWC) faces Ferndale on Monday, April 21, on the road. Mount Baker (1-10, 0-5 NWC) plays Lynden on Monday on the road.
