Twelve Whatcom County schools win achievement awards

Twelve Whatcom County schools are being honored for their successes over the past year with Washington Achievement Awards.

More than 400 schools throughout the state received achievement awards, which are sponsored by the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction and the State Board of Education.

The awards are given in six categories - overall excellence, high progress, math growth, reading growth, extended graduation rate and English language acquisition - using information from the state accountability index and federal accountability criteria.

Here is a list of local schools that have won achievement awards for 2013:

-- Bellingham School District: Alderwood Elementary won for overall excellence and special recognition for math growth; Happy Valley and Silver Beach elementary schools got special recognition for reading growth; Lowell Elementary for overall excellence and special recognition for reading and math growth.

-- Blaine School District: Blaine High School for high progress.

-- Ferndale School District: Cascadia Elementary and Ferndale High School got special recognition for English language acquisition; Windward High School special recognition for reading growth.

-- Meridian School District: Meridian High School for high progress.

-- Mount Baker School District: Kendall Elementary got special recognition for math growth; Mount Baker Senior High School for high progress.

-- Nooksack Valley School District: Nooksack Elementary for overall excellence and special recognition for reading growth.

The awards will be handed out Thursday, April 24, in Lacey.
