Bellingham girls' tennis beats Squalicum

The Bellingham girls' tennis team earned a 6-1 Northwest Conference victory over Squalicum on Monday, April 14, at Squalicum High School.

At No. 1 singles, Bellingham's Kira Vazorka earned a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Squalicum's Ali Anders and Mariah Miller and Oriana LoCicero also earned singles victories for the Red Raiders.

"I thought Oriana played a fantastic match. It was intense and a nail-biter from start to finish," Bellingham coach Steve Chronister said in a phone interview. "She played her best match. In general I thought we played well. Kira Vazorka, Mariah Miller, and Tess (Owen) and Keri (Brauner) played well again."

At No. 1 doubles, the Bellingham team of Catie Welch and Ellie Iwerson earned a 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 victory over Kim Dorr and Claire Jackson and the Red Raiders doubles teams of Tess Owen/Keri Brauner and Olivida Bjorklund/Ashley Spink also earned wins.

"(Welch and Iwerson) had to battle, but they figured it out," Chronister said. "They've done that before where they had some unforced errors that turned things around. In the third set they fixed it and that got them back on track."

Squalicum's lone win was from Tirsa Randall-Grutter who won in straight sets at No. 3 singles.

"There were a lot of close matches," Squalicum coach Joe O'Brien said in a phone interview. "We were really pleased with Kirsa's effort today."

Squalicum has a 3:30 p.m. NWC match Wednesday, April 16 at Sedro-Woolley, and Bellingham is in conference action at 3:30 p.m. Friday, April 18 when it plays at Sehome.
