Pioneers bats heat up in win

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDApril 12, 2014

Nooksack Valley's baseball team picked up a big 16-1 win over Concrete in five innings on Saturday, April 12, at Concrete.

Ryan Gelwicks threw 10 strikeouts and pitched the complete game.

"He pretty much dominated them," Nooksack coach Scott Gelwicks said in a phone interview. "He threw a lot of first-pitch strikes and really controlled the game."

The win sparked a hitting outburst from the Pioneers, which Scott Gelwicks hopes carries over to the rest of the season.

"As a young ball club, we tend to worry about who we play," he said. "A game like this lets us just go out and hit the ball. It helps us mentally."

Cole Mattice had four RBI on three hits for Nooksack.

The Pioneers (5-4, 1-2 NWC) face La Conner on Monday, April 14, at home.
