Ferndale's baseball team scored four runs early and cruised to a 10-2 win over Mount Baker in a Northwest Conference game on Friday, April 11, at Mount Baker.
"We got put on our heels a little bit," Mount Baker coach Quinn LeSage said in a phone interview. "At times we swung the bat well. We answered in the fifth and got two quick outs in the sixth."
That's when Ferndale broke open the ball game. With two outs in the sixth inning, they scored six runs and at one point had five consecutive hits.
"In my opinion, we played better than the score suggests," LeSage said. "We gave up that big inning and you can't do that if you're looking to win."
Andrew Zender took the loss but it was Cody Larson with the bulk of the work on the mound. Larson struck out five in 5 1/3 innings.
"He pitched extremely well until the sixth. He had a couple tough breaks," LeSage said.
Ferndale (5-5, 2-1 NWC) faces Sedro-Woolley on Monday, April 14, at Janick Field. Mount Baker (1-7, 0-2 NWC) plays Lynden Christian on Monday at home.
