Free bus rides on WTA this weekend

Whatcom Transportation Authority buses are offering free rides today, Friday, through Sunday, April 13, while the agency installs new fare boxes in its fleet.

Most payment options will remain the same with the new fare boxes, but WTA will not accept free ride coupons after Sunday.

The new boxes still will take cash, tokens, a valid bus pass or a Western Washington University ID. WTA will phase in new payment options, starting with a day pass and an 11-ride pass, later this year.

Installation of the fare boxes costs $1.5 million, with 80 percent covered by a federal grant. Details: 360-676-RIDE.
