Mount Baker boys' soccer surprises Pioneers in 3-1 win

Mount Baker scored a quick goal off of a corner kick in the second minute and defeated Nooksack Valley's boys' soccer team 3-1 on Thursday, April 10, at Nooksack Valley Elementary.

The Mountaineers came out strong, Nooksack Valley coach Valentin Villalobos said in a phone interview.

"It surprised us when they scored the first goal so quick," he added. "We had some shots and chances, but the ref wasn't making a lot of calls. That could have made a big difference."

Luke Van Wingerden scored for Nooksack Valley in the 29th minute to even the score up, but Baker got another goal to pull away two minutes later. The Mountaineers sealed their win in the 75th minute with a penalty kick goal.

Nooksack Valley will look to bounce back against Lynden Christian at noon Saturday, April 12, at Bender Fields. Mount Baker plays next at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 12, at Meridian.
