Red Raiders get win despite Blaine's strong play

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDApril 10, 2014

Bellingham's boys' soccer team came from behind to capture a 2-1 victory over Blaine on Thursday, April 10, at Pipeline Fields.

Nick Butschli opened the scoring in the 15th minute for Blaine. But Bellingham's Noe Betancourt-Cruz was able to score just before halftime and then Dane Thurston added one more after the break to secure the win.

"Noe did a good job of grinding out his goal. Dane did a good job of finishing his chance," Bellingham coach Matt Zigulis said in a phone interview.

Zigulis also gave high praise to Blaine's effort in the loss, saying Blaine's entire team was the "man of the match."

"Blaine outworked us the entire game," Zigulis said. "They deserve credit for how they played. We came in a bit entitled and paid the price by giving up the early goal. I was just happy we were able to wake up a bit, but Blaine deserved the result."

Bellingham plays Squalicum on Tuesday, April 15, at Civic Stadium. Blaine faces Ferndale on Tuesday at Pipeline Fields.
