Calling all superheroes! For a second year in a row, The Firs will put on the Superhero 5K Run/Walk, at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 12, at Bloedel Donovan Park.
Participants are encouraged to dress as their favorite superhero for the event, which will take runners and walkers through Whatcom Falls Park and back at Bloedel Donovan Park.
Proceeds will help low-income children in Bellingham attend The Firs Day Camp and after school programs. Entry is $20 for pre-registration, or $25 the day of the event, which opens at 8 a.m.
The first 300 entrants are entered to win a week of camp at Camp Firwood, Fircreek Day Camp or the Middle School Adventure Travel day camp. Pre-registration also guarantees an event T-shirt. Details: superhereos5k.org.
OPERA POPULARE CONCERT AT BELLINGHAM CHURCH
Opera Popolare and EEI present Opera Selections 2014, a concert of arias and duets performed by Opera Popolare singers and friends at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 12, at Garden Street United Methodist Church, 1326 N. Garden St.
Singers will present selections from The "Pirates of Penzance," "The Marriage of Figaro," "Die Fledermaus," "Carmen," "Candide" and "The Magic Flute," among others.
Rob Viens is music director and accompanist.
Local singers Wendy Donaghy and Sonia Alexis will sing the famous Barcarolle duet, "Belle Nuit" from "Tales of Hoffman."
Serena Viens and Lesley Rigg will reprise "Prepare Then," and Caitlin Hill will sing two of Despina's arias from "Cosi Fan Tutte."
Other locals singing in the production include Dorothy ChildsWeber, Talia Cerney, Amy Martin, Wanda Maddox, John Poppke, Normal Hall and Celie Thomas.

BELLINGHAM REPERTORY PRESENTS "PHRASINGS"
Bellingham Repertory Dance presents "Phrasings in Word + Dance," its annual collaboration with Chuckanut Sandstone Writers Theater, at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 5 p.m. Sunday, April 11-13, at Firehouse Performing Arts Center, 1314 Harris Avenue.
Audiences will see Bellingham dancers and poets meld their crafts for the stage.
"Phrasings" will premiere contemporary works choreographed by repertory dancers Miye Bishop, Jackie-Lou Brock, Tabetha Clark, Erinn Crosby-Dirth, Danielle Green and Diane Williams.
Collaborating poets include Betty Scott of Bellingham and others. Poetry by Bellingham residents Susan Chase-Foster and Harvey Schwartz and by Deming resident Stephanie Hopkinson also will be presented. The dancers and poets also will come together for an improvisation and free-write.
