Pioneers' Berkan shuts out Meridian

Nooksack Valley's Olivia Berkan threw four innings of one-hit softball and the Pioneers defeated Meridian 15-0 in four innings Monday, April 7, at Meridian.

Berkan struck out three Trojans and didn't walk or hit any batters in the Northwest Conference game.

"We played kind of sluggish for our first game after spring break," Meridian coach Jordan Chambers said in a phone interview. "We just weren't prepared."

Kayla Struiksma was 2 for 4 with three RBI for the Pioneers, and Chloe Gardner was 2 for 2 with two RBI. Gardner was also hit by a pitch in two at-bats.

"It was Eve (Castro)'s first pitching experience," Chambers said. "She threw strikes, they just hit well today."

Keana Waugh was 1 for 2 for Meridian.

Nooksack Valley's next game is against Sedro-Woolley at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 9, at Janicki Fields. Meridian takes on La Conner at 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 8, at home.
