WWU shut out by Sonoma State in semifinal


Matching the school's best run for the second time in 13 years competing at the Tournament of Champions, the Western Washington University softball team fell 6-0 to Sonoma State University in the semifinals of the Gold Bracket on Sunday afternoon at the Pedretti Sports Complex.

Sonoma State, 30-11, scored all six of its runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Vikings managed just four hits off Sonoma State pitcher Amanda Llerena (18-7), who struck out five and walked two.

Emma Blauser got the Vikings' only extra-base hit, a double, in the third.

The Vikings, who fell to 22-10, return to Great Northwest Athletic Conference action on Friday (1 p.m.), entertaining Western Oregon.
