New fare boxes but same payment options on WTA buses

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDApril 6, 2014

Riders of Whatcom Transportation Authority buses will notice a change when they board starting Friday, April 11.

New fare boxes will be installed in the entire fleet from Friday to Sunday, but most payment options will remain the same. The exception is that WTA will no longer accept free ride coupons, which must be used by Sunday, April 13.

The new boxes will still take cash, tokens, a valid bus pass or a Western Washington University ID.

WTA will phase in new payment options, starting with a day pass and an 11-ride pass, later this year.

Installation of the fare boxes costs $1.5 million, with 80 percent covered by a federal grant.
