Police: Everson man found walking miles away after rolling car on I-5

BELLINGHAM - Police arrested an Everson man who appeared to have walked away after his car rolled several times on southbound Interstate 5, striking another vehicle before landing in the median around 9:55 p.m. Friday, April 4, according to the Washington State Patrol.

When state troopers and the Bellingham Fire Department got to the crash near milepost 248, just south of Bellingham, the car the rolling vehicle had hit was pulled off to the side of the interstate, and that driver was not injured, Trooper Mark Francis said.

The rolled vehicle was in the median, but even with the help of the fire department's thermal imaging cameras, troopers couldn't find the driver, who they believed could have been ejected during the crash, he said.

Roughly three hours later, at 12:50 a.m., a trooper found Abel Vazquez-Jose, 28, walking southbound on I-5 near milepost 242, and "put two and two together," Francis said.

Vazquez-Jose was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and hit-and-run of an attended vehicle and booked into Whatcom County Jail early Saturday morning.
