Changes to Whatcom precincts get public hearing

The Whatcom County official in charge of elections is calling for several changes to the county's precinct boundaries, to account for expansions of Bellingham and Everson, and to make other corrections.

The County Council will hold a public hearing on the proposed precinct changes shortly after 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 8, in the County Courthouse, 311 Grand Ave., Bellingham.

Some changes are requested to avoid precincts split among more than one taxing district. Yet another set of changes would correct an error in the new boundary between U.S. congressional districts 1 and 2.

Residents' precincts have little bearing on how they vote because all voting is done by mail rather than at precinct polling places. The county auditor, Debbie Adelstein, must have the precinct changes completed before candidates file for precinct committee officer and other offices the week of May 12.
