Blaine's baseball team prepped for Northwest Conference play with two wins over La Conner on Wednesday, April 2, at Pipeline Fields.

In the first game, the Borderites capitalized on eight La Conner errors in an 11-2 win. Six of La Conner's errors came in the first two innings, in which Blaine scored six of its 11 runs.

"We took advantage of their mistakes," Blaine coach Sean Linville said in a phone interview. "It was just one of those games. The ball was in play a lot and their mistakes hurt them."

Josh Fakkema pitched 4 1/3 innings to pick up the win.

"He's still a young pitcher; he's learning things and has pretty good stuff. We are encouraged by that," Linville said. "We are still feeling our way through the pitching staff. We are at that point of the year where we need to decide who pitches these league games."

Jared Vogee started and finished the second game, striking out six in five innings while only allowing two hits in the 15-1 win.

"Today was a big step forward for him," Linville said.

Blaine starts NWC play on Monday, April 7, against Nooksack Valley.
