Schmidt's strong hitting leads Baker in split doubleheader

Mount Baker's baseball team split a doubleheader against Cascade and Cashmere on Monday, March 31, at Wenatchee Valley College. The Mountaineers defeated Cascade 7-4 in the first game but lost to Cashmere 8-2.

Carson Schmidt was the Mountaineers hitting leader, going 3 for 4 with a two-run triple against Cascade and 2 for 4 with a two-run single against Cashmere.

"Carson definitely paced us with the sticks," Mount Baker coach Quinn LeSage said in a phone interview. "It's a big park, so he put the ball in the right-center field gap (for his triple). There weren't any errors on the play, the ball just rolled to the wall."

Seth Bass threw a complete game against Cascade, striking out five and walking three.

"We really didn't help Seth too much defensively," LeSage said. "He did a good job pitching through that though."

Against Cashmere, Andrew Zender also threw a complete game, and threw better than the score indicates with just three of the eight runs being earned. Zender struck out six and walked three.

Mount Baker plays next at 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 8, at Ferndale.
