Truck strikes tree near Bayview Cemetery, injuring 1

BELLINGHAM - A man was arrested on suspicion of vehicular assault after crashing a white 2001 GMC truck near Bayview Cemetery early Saturday, March 29, injuring his passenger, according to police.

Jason C. Lee, 21, was driving westbound in the 2500 block of Lakeway Drive when his truck struck a tree next to the road, spun around and hit another tree around 3:45 a.m., Bellingham Police Sgt. Carr Lanham said.

The crash injured a 23-year-old passenger, who was taken to St. Joseph hospital with leg and arm injuries, Lanham said.

Lee had watery, bloodshot eyes, slurred speech, smelled of intoxicants, and blew a .113 in a preliminary breath test at the scene, Lanham said.

"The preliminary breath test does not have the same weight as a (Blood Alcohol Content) machine," he said.

Deputies performed a BAC test when Lee was booked into Whatcom County Jail, but Lanham said he didn't know what that result was.

The truck, which wrapped around a tree on impact, was towed from the scene.
