Whatcom County volunteers continue to provide help and support for the communities shaken by a massive mudslide over the weekend.
The Mt. Baker Chapter of the American Red Cross has deployed more than 30 volunteers to Darrington and Arlington to provide disaster relief throughout the area, said Executive Director Stacy Rice.
Volunteers are helping to feed community members and first responders, providing mental health support for first responders and those affected by the slide, and staffing shelters in Arlington and Darrington. Local volunteers are working in disaster headquarters in Everett to coordinate all of the relief efforts connected to the slide, and people are in the field picking up supplies and delivering them wherever they're needed.
"The main thing I've heard is just how everybody's prayers and hearts are going out to the community," Rice said. "So many people are affected far and near. People are so concerned about that community and so inspired by the outpouring of giving - and inspired by the community themselves and their strength and resiliency and their ability to walk through this together. It seems more like a family than a community."
HOW TO HELP
Many local businesses and organizations are collecting donations for those affected by the landslide. Here are a few ways people can help:
-- Donate to the American Red Cross disaster relief fund by calling 1-800-HELP-NOW or by going online to redcross.org. To donate $10, text redcross to 90999.
-- Haggen stores are collecting donations for the American Red Cross for the next month or so. On Friday, March 28, Haggen stores in Burlington, Arlington and Stanwood will donate 1 percent of their sales for the day to Red Cross relief efforts.
-- This weekend, Go Big Paintball Park in Lynden will donate $5 from every field fee to the Snohomish County Search and Rescue.
