WWU student earns tennis award

The United States Tennis Association named Cooper Anderson of Western Washington University as the Tennis on Campus National Leader of the Year for the 2013-14 season.

The award is presented annually to the college student who has made significant contributions to the USTA's program in a manner that benefits the well-being of fellow students and the surrounding community.

"This is such a great honor," said Anderson, a 21-year-old junior majoring in business sustainability. "When I took over as president, it was one of my goals to be a great leader and provide the best tennis experiences for students on the Western Washington club tennis team. To be honored by the USTA on a national level is really just incredible."

Anderson, from Yakima, plays doubles and mixed doubles for the WWU club team and will lead his team to the USTA Tennis on Campus National Championship on April 10-12 in Sunrise Ariz., where he will be presented with his award.

WWU is the only school that qualifyied to attend all 15 TOC National Championships.

UNITED SETS ROSTER FOR 2014 SEASON

After weeks of tryouts to play for the Bellingham United FC, the roster has been set for the 2014 season, which will start at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 27, with Vancouver visiting the United.

The roster will consist of Nathan Reitz, Christian Caro, Zachary Donahue, Jacob Vaughn, Dean Byron, Garrett Barber, Nathan Barber, Bailey Martin, Carlos Badillo, Bander Banawas, Nolan Smith, Kyle Angle, Kenny Parker, Coriano Harris, Sam Carpenter, Conlon Kiffney, Jack A. Fuchs, Tony Clarke, Patrick Myatt, Sean Connor, Ryo Matsubara, Yair Sandoval, Carlos Bentancourt, Joel Grossman, Tyler Hughes, Taylor Turner, Muhammed Marenel, Daniel Anderson, Tye Hastings, Jamie Orozco, Mark Pollack and Riley Liddle.

BLAZERS RAISING FUNDS FOR TRIP

The Bellingham Blazers, a tier III junior hockey team and NPHL Cascade Cup champions, are raising money to fund their trip to the USA Hockey Tier III Junior National Championship Tournament, which will take place April 3-7 in Simsbury, Conn.

The Blazers will host a Celebration Fundraiser from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday, March 29, at the Bellingham Sportsplex.

Cost is $10 for adults and $8 for youth.

The event will have interactive events with skating, hockey skills games with players, a silent auction and a game between the Blazers and a team of elite men's players.

BBST PERFORMS WELL AT REGIONAL

The Bellingham Bay Swim Team placed ninth at the Northwest Regional Age Group Championships with two champions and 17 new team records.

Audrey Shenkin took first in the 100 freestyle in the 17 year old girls' division and first in the 200 freestyle.

Emma Carlton won the 100 fly in the 13-14 girls' division.

Also with top eight finishes were Grace Kim (8th in 50 breast), Molly Vagt (8th in 1650 free), Rowan King (7th in 100 breast), Olivia Nielsen (5th in 200 fly, 6th in 100 fly), Sydney Wong (3rd in 500 free, 7th in 100 free, 7th in 200 free, 8th in 50 free), Emma Frey (8th in 100 back, 7th in 200 back), Hunter May (2nd in 100 back, 3rd in 50 back) and Roy Evans (3rd in 200 breast, 4th in 100 breast).

LYNDEN SOFTBALL STARTS SOON

The Lynden Spring League Slo-Pitch Games will begin April 14.

Games are on Tuesdays and Thursday evenings.

The league consists of six weeks of doubleheaders and the team fee of $550 is due by April 5.

MARSHALL ACES NO. 6 AT LAKE PADDEN

Larry Marshall made a hole in one on the No. 6, 185 yard hole at Lake Padden Golf Course.

Marshall used a driver to ace the hole on Saturday, March 22.

It was Marshall's second hole in one on Lake Padden's No. 6 and third overall of his career.

Witnesses were Joel Wark, Mark Smith and Steve Wilson.

GOLF FOR THE LADIES

The Ladies League at Avalon Golf Links meets at 9 a.m. every Tuesday.

All skill levels are welcome and no USGA handicap is required.

EATON, WILLIAMS 2ND IN GOLF TOURNEY

Bret Eaton and Trivin Williams were second in the Pro Assistant Tournament at Royal Oaks Golf and Country Club in Portland, Ore.

The duo scored a 68-65 to and lost in a playoff.
