Two huge innings is all it took.
Lynden's softball team scored four runs in the second inning and five runs in the fifth inning to top Sehome 9-5 on Monday, March 24, at Frank Geri Fields.
In the second inning, the Lions started off with four consecutive hits. In the fifth inning, it was Sehome's two errors that unraveled the Mariners.
"When they got the four, they hit the ball good," Sehome coach Jim Emerson said in a phone interview. "In the fifth, we made those errors and it opened up the flood gates. We can't give extra outs to good teams."
Mallory Kruzich took her fifth loss on the mound, but was complimented by her coach saying it was her best effort of the year.
"Unfortunately, the defense hurt us in that one inning," Emerson said. "Mallory did a nice job pitching."
The Mariners spread their five runs out, led once again by Morgan Henry (3 for 4) and Gabby Gorosave (3 for 4). Kruzich went 2 for 4 at the plate with two RBI and Sam Hruby went 2 for 4.
"One good thing right now is that we don't have any quit in us," Emerson said. "We're doing some good things and the girls don't quit. We just need to start the engine earlier.
Tanna Benson picked up the win for Lynden and Hannah Rothwell went 3 for 4 with two runs and an RBI. Kaylee Vis also knocked in three runs for Lynden.
Lynden faces Meridian on Wednesday, March 27, in the Lions first Northwest Conference game. Sehome plays Lynden Christian on Thursday, March 28, at Geri Field.
