Ferndale takes draw after early lead

Ferndale's boys' soccer team couldn't capitalize on an early two-goal lead and took a 2-2 draw with Anacortes in the opening Northwest Conference match on Monday, March 24, at Ferndale High School.

Josh Seig connected in the 24th minute and then again in the 26th minute in what his coach, Scott Browne, described as a "beautiful goal" to give Ferndale the commanding lead.

"He hit it from the 25-yard line, top shelf," Browne said in a phone interview. "He's very creative. He's a quality player and when we give him opportunities he can be dangerous. I'm proud of his performance and he should be proud of himself. He needed to step up and he did."

The lead was short-lived, however, as Anacortes scored in the 37th and 40th minutes to tie up the game.

"We're a young team and we can lose focus. It's something we'll work on," Browne said.

Ferndale face Mount Baker on Wednesday, March 26, on the road.
