Meeting to update boaters on Lake Whatcom, Samish inspections

Lake Whatcom boat inspection

Rachel Garcia, left, an aquatic invasive species inspector with the Lake Whatcom Management program, looks in an anchor well with boat owner Richard McLellan, right, on the first day of required boat inspections for invasive species Saturday, April 27, 2013 at Bloedel Donovan Park in Bellingham. David Lofgren, center, also with the Lake Whatcom Management program, is in the background. McLellan, who lives near Lake Samish, brought his boat to the park so he could get the annual pass and learn what he can do to keep invasive species off his boat.

BELLINGHAM - A presentation on Thursday, March 27, will give boaters the chance to learn about the 2014 boat inspection program, intended to prevent harmful shellfish and other invasive species from entering Lake Whatcom and Lake Samish.

The meeting is from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Bloedel Donovan Gymnasium. The discussion will include an overview of what's new in the program's second year, including a requirement that kayaks and canoes get inspected.

Presenters also will review the accomplishments of the 2013 program.

Bellingham and Whatcom County officials seek to prevent zebra and quagga mussels from entering the lakes. The shellfish grow in masses that can clog water pipes and foul boats, beaches and docks.
