Red Raiders hit well, split with La Conner

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDMarch 22, 2014

Bellingham's softball team split its doubleheader with La Conner on Saturday, March 22, at La Conner.

The Red Raiders took the first game 13-4 behind Eliza Rossman's pitching and hitting.

She pitched a complete game - her second consecutive - while driving in three runs and going 4 for 5 with a triple.

"We had offense all day. That was good to see," Bellingham coach Rick Ellis said in a phone interview. "We haven't swung the bats particularly well to start the season, but we've been showing patience. Today, we attacked strikes and put the ball in play."

The Red Raiders jumped out of the gates with four runs and coasted from there.

The second game didn't slow down the Bellingham bats. The Red Raiders scored 14 runs but fell 15-14. They had a 14-11 lead going into the bottom half of the seventh, but a tired Rossman, who came in relief of Lindsey Richard in the third inning, gave up four runs.

"It was Rossman's 19th inning in less than 24 hours," Ellis said, "so it was a little bit of fatigue."

Bellingham moves to 2-2 on the season and Ellis couldn't be happier.

"We're a young team and we're 2-2 this early," Ellis said. "I'm thrilled. The program is headed in the right direction and we're competing every game."

Bellingham faces Squalicum on Tuesday, March 25, at home.
