Lynden Christian boys' track and field preview capsule

Coach: Kent DeHoog

Last year: Finished 10th at Northwest Conference Championships with 20 points. ... Finished 11th at Class 1A Tri-District Meet with 23 points. ... Didn't score at Class 1A State Championships

Returning state participants: Trevor Burden (sr. 3,200, 4x100), Nathan Rusnak (jr. 4x100, 4x400), Sam Vander Griend (jr. 4x100)

Others to watch: Cody Spoelstra (sr. throws/hurdles/jumps), Joe Kooiman (sr. throws), Logan Carlson (sr. throws/jumps), Josh Friberg (sr. throws/relays)

Outlook: The Lyncs are thin on bodies this season but do return three state participants in Trevor Burden, Nathan Rusnak and Sam Vander Griend. "Our goal every year is to try to qualify a relay team," Lynden Christian coach Kent DeHoog said, "because we often don't have the high-level performers who can qualify in individual events." LC looks to be on track to hopefully get one of its relay teams through. Newcomer and basketball standout Logan Carlson is expected to fill the void left by three-time state relay participant Connor Blok, and he should also be able to contend in the high jump. Lynden Christian doesn't have a whole lot of depth in the throwing events, but Cody Spoelstra is arguably the Lyncs' best. He narrowly missed making state in the discus last year, and DeHoog thinks he should qualify this spring. Senior Joe Kooiman is another one to watch in the throwing events.
