Sehome girls' golf capsule

SEHOME

MARINERS

Coach: Don Helling

Last year: The Mariners finished 10th in the Northwest Conference last year. ... Sehome sent two golfers to districts in Melanie Henley and Hannah Peterson, although neither advanced to state.

Players to watch: Hannah Peterson (Jr.); Taylor Firmstone (So.).

Outlook: The Mariners are a young group that will rely on junior team captain Hannah Peterson and newcomer Taylor Firmstone to lead the group. Peterson is the lone letter winner from last year after playing in the district championships, and coach Don Helling hopes she's able to build upon that experience. "I just want her to continue to improve her skills, and she has already shown that she can teach as well as play," Helling said in a phone interview. "She's a great leader to have to build the team." Firmstone comes in a sophomore without any varsity experience, but Helling said she is by no means new to the game of golf. "She has a lot of experience playing recreationally," Helling said. "She's starting the season off in fine form." A large group of freshmen make up the rest of the Mariners' squad, and what the future holds for many of them is uncertain. If they take to the game like Helling expects, though, Sehome should be able to put together a group that is far better at the end of the year than it is in the early portions.
