Mount Baker girls' golf capsule

Coach: Mike Lembo

Last year: Mount Baker finished third in the Northwest Conference standings last year. ... The Mountaineers sent one golfer to the Class 1A state tournament.

Players to watch: Emma Brown (Sr.); Baylee Backstrom (Sr.); Erika Henderson (Sr.); Asia Roman (So.).

Outlook: Despite losing the top 1A finisher in Laura Wilson last year, the Mountaineers do have three returning seniors in Emma Brown, Baylee Backstrom and Erika Henderson who all have strong varsity experience. Brown returns as coach Mike Lembo's No. 1 golfer, and she's shown throughout the first parts of the season why she's earned that distinction. "Her game has improved a bit, and she has really learned how to fight through it and just scrap," Lembo said in a phone interview. Backstrom had a solid year, as well, and sophomore Asia Roman has done well enough through the first part of the season to fill out a strong rotation for Lembo. "They have competed well in their first two matches," Lembo said. "Our sophomores played really well. Really stepped it up." The battle for the final two spots is an open competition, and Lembo said he will mix in who gets a chance to golf at the varsity level. "Two sophomores in there right now, but I have several freshmen that are all competing," Lembo said.
