Meridian girls' golf capsule

MERIDIAN

TROJANS

Coach: Steve Lawrence

Last year: Meridian finished sixth in the Northwest Conference standings last year. ... The Trojans sent one golfer to the Class 1A state tournament last year.

Players to watch: Estee Shafter (Sr.); Anna Ratzlaff (Jr.); Miranda Nunamaker (Sr.).

Outlook: The Trojans aren't going to be particularly experienced this year, but with 19 girls turning out, coach Steve Lawrence won't be short on bodies. "Got 19 girls that turned out this year, which is astronomical," Lawrence said in a phone interview. "A lot of girls coming out for the first time, trying to learn a new sport. We're trying to make it fun and have a good time. Not a lot of high expectations." Senior Estee Shafer is Meridian's No. 1 golfer, and she's shown progress throughout the early part of the season, Lawrence said. "She's got the most experience," said Lawrence of Shafer. So has Miranda Nunamaker, who golfed on JV last year but is jumping into the role of being team captain given her experience in the program. "She's a leader that way," Lawrence said. Junior Anna Ratzlaff offered a nice surprise to Lawrence in the Trojans' first tournament, placing the best of his girls. "That was cool," Lawrence said. "She hasn't played any team golf, but she's played in the past a little. She has at least a little bit of experience that way."
