Ferndale girls' golf capsule

Coach: Margie Hovde

Last year: The Golden Eagles finished eighth in the Northwest Conference standings. ... The girls' golf team claimed a 3A state academic title last season after posting a 3.874 team GPA.

Players to watch: Cienna Sensak (Jr.); Annie Jane Burns (Jr.); Jillian Anderson (So.); Maeson Mullens (So.); Brittany Olinger (Fr.).

Outlook: The Golden Eagles hit the golf course this season without a single senior, but that doesn't necessarily mean they aren't going to contend. Ferndale had 17 girls turn out for the team versus seven last year, and with returners like Cienna Sensak and Annie Jane Burns, coach Margie Hovde likes the makeup of her team. "They are making great progress," Hovde said in a phone interview. "The beginning girls are really catching on fast, and the girls from last year are coming back stronger." Hovde has a fair amount of newcomers trying to make their way onto the varsity lineup, and she is instilling a more competitive atmosphere for the bottom three spots in the rotation so other girls get a shot at varsity competition. "We're kind of figuring out a little system to make this good competition in our ranks before they go out and golf against other schools," she said. Jillian Anderson and Maeson Mullens are two young golfers Hovde is excited to watch progress throughout the year given their lack of experience coming into the season.
