Blaine girls' golf capsule

Coach: Laura Vincent

Last year: Blaine finished seventh in the Northwest Conference standings last year. ... The Borderites sent one golfer to the Class 1A state tournament.

Players to watch: Maddy Vargo (So.); Cassidy Justosen (Fr.).

Outlook: Coach Laura Vincent isn't the only thing new to Blaine's girls' golf team. Vincent, who is entering her first year as the head of the program, doesn't have a single player returning from last year's club. "We're starting from scratch," she said in a phone interview. "Our whole team is made of freshmen and sophomores." With that in mind, Vincent is taking the approach that she, like her golfers, are going to have the opportunity to grow together throughout the season. But after losing some key seniors off last year's team, Vincent is going to rely on a group of untested golfers to play at the varsity level, some of which are just learning the game of golf. "We've been working on basics and doing drills," she said. "A couple of the girls haven't played before, but have hit balls before." Sophomore Maddy Vargo and freshman Cassidy Justosen have taken to the game quickly, she said, with Justosen playing in her first varsity match last week. "She was really nervous. That kind of got to her at first," Vincent said. "But I think with some practice and getting some confidence she is going to go far."
