MERIDIAN

TROJANS

Coach: Bryant D'Hondt

Last year: The Trojans finished 12th in the Northwest Conference standings last year with a per-round average of 498.1.

Players to watch: Jon Kihm (NA); Nick Rautenberg (NA); Joel Eschbach (NA).

Outlook: Coach Bryant D'Hondt started off this season getting strong play from his top golfers in John Kihm, Nick Rautenberg and Joel Eschbach shooting an 87, 89 and 90, respectively, at the North Bellingham Golf Course on March 18. "I'm pretty excited about this year," he said in a phone interview. "(We're) way ahead of where we started last year." Rautenberg is Meridian's top returning golfer from last year after putting together a per-round average of 95.4. Kihm and Eschbach weren't too far behind him, though, as they shot a 100.8 and 100.2, respectively, last season. And early indications are that the three are going to post lower numbers than at any point last season given their maturation on the course. Most importantly, though, D'Hondt said, is teaching the fundamentals of the game and letting everything else sort itself out at the end. "Our focus is having fun every day," he said. "We're continuing to get better. ... They are just coming together as one." He even said the team decided to not vote for captains because it sees itself as a group, not as an assortment of individuals.
