Lynden boys' golf capsule

Coach: Russ Dorr

Last year: The Lions finished second in the Northwest Conference standings behind Bellingham. ... Lynden sent two golfers to state, finishing seventh in the 2A field.

Players to watch: Ezra Arneson (So.); Collin Barclay (Sr.); Alex Crabtree (So.); Casey Ward (Fr.).

Outlook: Lynden coach Russ Dorr said plainly: "This is the youngest team I've ever had." Seeing how it's his 20th year in the position, he's got quite a sample size from which to levy such a statement, and despite the Lions' age, he likes what he's seen so far. "I'm listening and learning to what their needs are," Dorr said in a phone interview. "We're not going to set the world on fire, but we're going to compete. It's going to be fun to watch." Senior team captain Collin Barclay and sophomore Ezra Arneson are going to lead the group scoring-wise. Barclay is coming off a strong junior campaign where he finished in the top 25 golfers in the Northwest Conference with a per-round average of 84.2. He's continued to show that same level of progression, Dorr said. "He's just a great leader," Dorr said of Barclay. Arneson's game, Dorr said, is that of someone who will be an elite golfer in the Northwest Conference some day, and he's transitioning to the game well. "His skill set is really high," Dorr said. "He's a tier 1 kid." As a whole, the team's youth offers excitement not only for this year, but for years to come, he added.
