Mount Baker's softball team received a strong outing from starting pitcher Aleks Toivola, and she was backed by a stingy defense as the Mountaineers beat Lynden Christian 10-0 in five innings during a non-Conference game Thursday, March 20, in Deming.

Toivola (2-0) allowed only two hits, and Mount Baker didn't record a single error. Lynden Christian's Kasey Luna took the loss.

"The key to the game was defense," Baker coach Ron Lepper said in a phone interview. "We only faced 17 batters, so the defense made a lot of plays."

Second baseman Sara Verry was one of those. She factored into six outs, and Lepper said she made a pair of really nice plays.

Emily Brandland went 1 for 3 with a triple and four RBI, while Heidi Chambers, Jordan Miles and Emma Lallas each went 2 for 3.

Luna and Jenah Korthuis recorded both of LC's hits.

Mount Baker travels to play Nooksack Valley next at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 25, at Nooksack Valley Middle School in Everson, while the Lyncs travel to play Chelan in a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 22.
