Meridian boys' soccer falls to Anacortes

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDMarch 20, 2014

Meridian goalkeeper Joe Worley made some great saves, but Anacortes snuck a couple shots past him to top the Trojans 2-1 on Thursday, March 20, at Meridian.

"He couldn't have played better," Meridian coach Joe Spencer said in a phone interview of his freshman netminder. "He was making all the big saves. He's a big kid, so he dominated everything in the air."

Jake Birnell scored Meridian's lone goal in the 22nd minute off of a free kick.

"He overhit it a bit, but it carried in," Spencer said. "I thought my kids brought a lot more spirit and excitement; we were much more organized. I admit Anacortes dominated, but they didn't get anything easy from us."

Meridian looks to bounce back at 6 p.m. Saturday, March 22, at Sedro-Woolley.
