Kamena key in Lyncs 2-1 win over Baker

Trevor Kamena had a goal and an assist to lead the Lynden Christian boys' soccer team to a 2-1 win over Mount Baker on Thursday, March 20, at Bender Fields.

Kamena's 53rd-minute goal evened up the game at 1-1. The Mountaineers' Manuel Mendez had given his team the lead in the 33rd minute with a rebound off Lyncs goalkeeper Zach Oswald.

"We had a bit of a slow start, we were disappointed that we were flat after a big win over Lynden," Lynden Christian coach Brent De Ruyter said in a phone interview. "In the second half we responded well, possessed better and came up with more scoring opportunities."

Mount Baker goalkeeper Bryce Logan earned De Ruyter's praise for his play in the net, where he had six saves. LC's Cody Fransen put in the game winner with a header off of a Kamena corner kick in the 79th minute.

"We just played very opportunistic," De Ruyter said. "Cody had a great finish over the top of a defender."

Lynden Christian hosts Blaine at 4:30 p.m. Friday, March 21, at Bender Fields. Baker takes on Nooksack Valley at 4:30 p.m. Friday, March 21, at home.
