Lynden Lions girls' tennis preview capsule

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDMarch 20, 2014

LYNDEN

LIONS

Coach: Trey Ballard

Last year: Finished ninth in the Northwest Conference with an 0-8 record and went 2-12 overall.

Players to watch: Kira Kollmyer (so.), Bridget Johnson (jr.), Emily Brown (jr.), Alex Schulhouser (jr.), Kelsey Hewson (jr.)

Outlook: Lynden is left with a young group and only one senior after graduating its top seniors from 2013. "We are in a rebuilding year, but we are looking forward to it and want to have lots of fun," Lions coach Trey Ballard said in a phone interview. Sophomore Kira Kollmyer played in Lynden's No. 4 singles position last year, but Ballard is expecting her to make the leap to No. 1 singles. Junior Bridget Johnson played doubles last year but will fall in behind Kollmyer as Lynden's No. 2 singles player. Junior duo Alex Schulhouser and Kelsey Hewson give the Lions a solid combination at No. 1 doubles. They earned Lynden's lone win during the Lions' season opener against Ferndale. Junior Emily Brown is another player to watch and should help the Lions as they try to improve on last year's record.
