Sehome Mariners girls' tennis preview capsule

Coach: Bonna Giller

Last year: Won a Northwest Conference title with an 8-0 record and finished 17-0 overall. ... Had one doubles entry at state, and the team of Andrea Clawson and Lauren Smith won a state title. ... Finished fourth as a team at state.

Players to watch: Andrea Clawson (jr.), Lauren Smith (so.), Lizzie Friesen (so.), Simone Hall (jr.), Madison Harris (jr.), Taylor Harris (jr.), Natalie Knops (jr.)

Outlook: Sehome coach Bonna Giller admittedly doesn't feel much pressure when it comes to putting together this year's lineup. Her top four singles players return, and Giller's top doubles teams are back, too, which doesn't mean anything good for Sehome's opposition. "It's awesome," said Giller of returning her same varsity lineup. "It's one less question mark that I have to start the season with." The Mariners are talented, and so deep Giller said any of Sehome's top four singles players could beat each other, and the same goes for the Mariners' doubles teams. Returning doubles state champs Andrea Clawson and Lauren Smith are expected to be Sehome's No 1 and 2 singles players, and Lizzie Friesen and Simone Hall round out the singles varsity lineup. Madison Harris, Taylor Harris and Natalie Knops should be top doubles players. "We will continue to challenge (each other), and the kids will jockey for positioning," Giller said. "They can't rest on their laurels."
