Ferndale Golden Eagles girls' tennis preview capsule

FERNDALE

GOLDEN EAGLES

Coach: Ed Sweitzer

Last year: Finished tied for seventh in the Northwest Conference with a 2-6 record and went 2-11 overall.

Players to watch: Lauren Mattaini (jr.), Shelby Slaughter (jr.), Carly Bannerman (jr.), Cassidy Newman (sr.)

Outlook: New coach Ed Sweitzer knows he has a young Golden Eagles group to work with, but while an inexperienced team usually doesn't amount to many wins, Sweitzer has the opportunity to embed a new culture that can stick with the young players. "The No. 1 thing is we want to compete," Sweitzer said. "If the girls go out and play as hard as they can and not give up and just compete and grind, they will get good results." Thirty-eight girls turned out for tennis this spring and all but five are underclassmen. Two of those five are seniors. Junior Lauren Mattaini is slated to own Ferndale's No. 1 singles spot, and Shelby Slaughter and Carly Bannerman are both strong players. Sweitzer said senior Cassidy Newman "is the engine that is driving" the team's new attitude. Ferndale is an athletic group, and Sweitzer believes if the girls stick with the program they might soon be on par with powers such as Bellingham and Sehome.
