Blaine goalkeeper Tristan Hunter saved an early penalty kick and the Borderites staged a second-half comeback to top Nooksack Valley's boys' soccer team 2-1 on Wednesday, March 19, at Nooksack Valley.
Hunter made the diving penalty save in the 18th minute after a sliding tackle in the box gave the Pioneers' Jesus Martinez a shot. Martinez would net a goal in the 32nd minute to put Nooksack Valley up going into the half.
After halftime, Blaine's Nick Butschli scored a goal in the 51st minute, and Kai Griffin netted the game-winner in the 72nd minute.
"It was a really exciting game, very even on both sides," Blaine coach Giovanni Quesada said in a phone interview. "We came back and dominated after Butschli scored. The defense was solid, there was a lot of communication."
Blaine's next game is at Lynden Christian at 4:30 p.m. Friday, March 21, at Bender Fields. Nooksack Valley takes on Mount Baker at 4:30 p.m. Friday, March 21, on the road.
