Freshman keeper steps up to save tie for Red Raiders

Bellingham's boys' soccer team didn't get the result it wanted, but the Red Raiders were pleased with the performance in 0-0 tie with Oak Harbor on Tuesday, March 18, at Oak Harbor.

The Red Raiders survived a scare in stoppage time, when a penalty kick was awarded to Oak Harbor. Connor Zeljkov, recently called up from the junior varsity team, stepped up and made the save to hold the tie.

"He dove to the right and blocked it with two hands," Bellingham coach Matt Zigulis said in a phone interview. "He stepped up and saved it. It was amazing. It gave us a positive end to the game. We felt the tie was undeserved so that lifted our spirits."

Despite not scoring, the Red Raiders controlled possession and created a lot of chances.

"We were unfortunate to not find the back of the net," Zigulis said. "The players' intensity, grit and character stood out."

Bellingham faces Ferndale on Thursday, March 20, at home.
