Mount Baker's softball team won its season-opening game 11-10 over Anacortes on Tuesday, March 18, at Anacortes.
The Mountaineers scored 10 runs combined between the fifth and six innings to steal the win. Lacey Postelwait led the way at the plate, going 2 for 3 with three runs scored and a home run.
"It was our first time seeing live pitching this season," Baker coach Ron Lepper said in a phone interview. "We started getting our bat on the ball. We hit the ball hard and capitalized on mistakes. We put pressure on them by staying in it."
Baker's Aleks Toivola was able to hold on for the win after her team gave her a three-run lead in the top of the sixth. She allowed two in the sixth inning, forcing a stressful seventh inning. She handled it with ease, striking out two in the final inning.
"She was OK," Lepper said. "She struggled hitting her spots in a few places, but she came through in the seventh."
Lepper was pleased with his team the first time out, especially with two freshman - Jordan Miles, who hit a triple, and Chyanne Ortloff - starting.
"We did a lot of good things, but we did some bad," Lepper said. "Jordan and Chyanne did a nice job. They were a good part of what we did well today."
Baker is back on the diamond on Thurday, March 20, to face Lynden Christian.
