Fransen scores to lead Lyncs past Lions

In the battle of Lynden rivals, Cody Fransen scored just before the half to give Lynden Christian a 1-0 win over Lynden on Tuesday, March 18, at Bender Fields.

Fransen collected the ball just inside the 18, beat a couple defenders and finished with his left foot past Lynden's Hector Gutierrez.

"Hector's a great keeper," LC coach Brent De Ruyter said in a phone interview. "But the traffic in front gave him trouble and Cody finished it perfectly."

The match was even throughout, as is typical with Lyncs-Lions matches, De Ruyter said.

"For the first match of the season, I was thrilled," he added. "We had a good mindset, our possession was pretty solid, our assertiveness was a factor."

Lynden's Gutierrez certainly kept the Lions in the game, at one point saving back-to-back shots from 15 yards out.

"Hector played a great match in goal," De Ruyter said. "He made some good decisions."

LC (1-0) faces Mount Baker on Thursdy, March 20, at Bender Fields. Lynden (0-2) plays Lakewood on Friday, March 21, at Lakewood.

Goal: Cody Fransen (LC), time: 38. Shots on goal: Lynden 9; LC 9. Goalies (saves) Lynden: Hector Gutierrez (8); LC: Zach Oswald (7).
