THE BELLINGHAM HERALDMarch 18, 2014

Ferndale's girls' tennis team started its season off with a 5-2 win over Lynden on Tuesday, March 18, at Ferndale.

The Golden Eagles' Holley Clark impressed new coach Ed Sweitzer with her 6-4, 6-6 (7) win over Lynden's Emily Brown.

"It was a very determining match," Sweitzer said in a phone interview. "It was a great match, very long. She just gutted it out and wore her down. She bent but didn't break."

Ferndale's Shelby Slaughter and Carly Bannerman also impressed their dominating play in a doubles 6-4, 6-2 win over the Lions' Bailey Mulder and Kellie Fiebig, Sweitzer said.

Lynden hosts Squalicum at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 20, at the Lynden YMCA. Ferndale takes on Anacortes at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, March 20, at Anacortes.
