Benson leads Lynden softball over Nooksack Valley

Lynden's softball team got off to a quick start with two first-inning runs and held off Nooksack Valley for a 5-1 win Tuesday, March 18, at Nooksack Valley. The Lions' Tanna Benson was 2 for 4 with a run, a double and an RBI.

Benson also pitched all seven innings for Lynden, giving up just one run and five hits. The Lions' defense also didn't commit an error. Mandy Warner was 2 for 4 with a run for Lynden.

Kayla Struiksma also threw all seven innings for the Pioneers, giving up 10 hits. Alexis Pike was 1 for 3 with a run.

"Both kids pitched well, they were just able to string a few more hits together than we were," Nooksack Valley coach Tom Harmon said in a phone interview. "Both of them got in some jams and worked out of them."

Nooksack Valley takes on Friday Harbor at noon Saturday, March 22, at Nooksack Valley Middle School. The Lions host Ferndale at 4 p.m. Thursday, March 20.
