Haggen scores impressive goal, Sehome wins

Sehome's boys' soccer team got the only goal in the 24th minute and topped Lynden 1-0 on Monday, March 17, at Bender Fields.

The Mariners' Sam Willis got the ball out wide and sent in a cross that found the foot of Jesse Haggen, who volleyed it into the net.

"It was a beautiful goal," Sehome coach John Sylvester said in a phone interview. "It was a nice feeling to get the season started by scoring the first goal."

Sehome controlled possession much of a game, in which both teams were shaking out the kinks.

"A lot of people played for us and I thought they complemented each other well," Sylvester said. "We dominated possession but Lynden's got a good defense."

Even though it's a win, Sylvester knows its early in the season.

"It's a good start," Sylvester said. "It doesn't mean much yet though. We're still putting the pieces together and so is (Lynden)."

Sehome gets right back to action against Ferndale on Tuesday, March 18, at Civic Field. Lynden also hits the field again quickly, facing Lynden Christian on Tuesday at Bender Fields.

Goal: Jesse Haggen (Sehome), assist: Sam Willis: time: 24. Shots on goal: Sehome 8; Lynden 16. Goalies (saves) Sehome: Devon Trueb (4), Max Biehl (4); Lynden: Hector Gutierrez (15).
