Ferndale baseball stumbles in season-opener

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDMarch 17, 2014

Ferndale's baseball team hit well, but couldn't score its runners as the Golden Eagles fell 6-3 to Stanwood on Monday, March 17, at home. Kyler Brudwick was 2 for 4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored for Ferndale.

Kyle Baker took the loss for Ferndale, pitching three innings before handing the ball to Chase Olson for the remainder of the game.

"It was typical first-game stuff, we walked some guys and didn't throw enough strikes," Ferndale coach Donny Hennigs said in a phone interview. "The defense kind of let them down at times though. We had some good at bats from our veteran guys, and some other guys need to keep working to be more competitive at the plate."

Pete Pennylegion hit 2 for 4 and scored a run for Ferndale. Brady Bauthues was 1 for 3 with a run and an RBI, and Joey Akers was 1 for 3 with an RBI. The Golden Eagles committed four errors.

Ferndale takes on Sehome in a nonleague game at 4 p.m. Tuesday, March 18, at Sehome.
