Bellingham lands on list of having the best downtown

The website Livability.com has named Bellingham as having one of the best downtown districts in the U.S.

Here's a (link) on what they liked about Bellingham, which ranked eighth on the list.

The write-up on the website cited a variety of things that helped Bellingham make the list, including the recent addition of around 1,000 residential units, the draw of Depot Market Square and the focus on locally owned companies, particularly the high number of arts-related businesses.

The only other Pacific Northwest community to make the list was Eugene, Ore.

That's quite a tip of the hat for Bellingham, given how empty the area was in the years after Bellis Fair mall opened in 1988.

According to the website, Livability.com looks at what makes small- to mid-sized cities great places to live. Looking at a variety of factors, the website regularly puts together the lists of livable cities.
