Ferndale's boys' soccer team may not have gotten the result, but the Golden Eagles put up quite a performance in their first game of the season - a 1-0 loss to Oak Harbor on Saturday, March 15, at Oak Harbor.

The Wildcats came out in the second half by pushing their outside defenders up to press Ferndale, but the Golden Eagles' defense stayed together and held Oak Harbor off for most of the half.

"We acted as a single unit," Ferndale coach Scott Browne said in a phone interview. "Everything we worked on, they executed. They held their shape. As a young crew, we needed that confidence. I'm extremely proud of the boys."

The only goal came in the 74th minute when a failed clearance deflected to Oak Harbor's Gavin Stewart, who promptly found the net.

"That's the unfortunate thing about soccer," Browne said. "One tiny mistake can cost."
