Nooksack Valley boys' soccer capsule

Coach: Valentin Villalobos

Last year: The Pioneers finished 11th in the Northwest Conference after going 2-9-1 in league play. ... They finished 4-12-1 overall. ... Nooksack Valley lost to Mount Baker 4-2 in the opening round of districts.

Players to watch: Luke Van Wingerden (Jr., F); Luis Garcia (So., M); William Kingma (Jr., D).

Outlook: Valentin Villalobos is excited from what he's seen thus far from his Nooksack Valley squad, and he has good reason. He returns arguably the best forward in the league in junior Luke Van Wingerden, who scored 22 goals alone last year. "He's back and he looks in good shape," Villalobos said in a phone interview. "I'm pretty sure the (forwards) this year will be the best this year than any other year." Luis Garcia and William Kingma's play in the midfield and defense, respectively, should provide stability behind Van Wingerden up top, although Villalobos is looking to get more production on offense from other players. "We have pretty much the same roster as last year," Villalobos said. "They are getting more experienced and working harder and harder and harder."
